Music Monday: Sirius Traveling
|
the Sirius logo before the XM merger
- I’m stealing Sybil Law’s bullet list for today’s blog post.
- I missed a week for Music Monday due to being on the road.
- Speaking of, I still need to post my pics from my recent trip. This week.. I promise.
- Back to the music part of this post, I’ve taken many road trips in the almost 5 years I’ve had Sirius satellite radio in my car. It’s nice to have a set of stations that play awesome music that never fade out or lose signal [except for the minute or two when you are under a freeway overpass].
- I pretty much stick to the same channels: the decade stations [as I call them] 40’s on 4, 70’s on 7, 80’s on 8. Classic Vinyl, Classic Rewind, Alt Nation, Sirius XMU, Howard 100 and Howard 101.
Pearl Jam Radio on Sirius – Channel 17
- Every so often, a new channel gets added or one replaces a channel for a period of time. Like the new Pearl Jam channel. Where it’s all Pearl Jam, all the time. Live songs, interviews, album tracks, other projects Eddie Vedder, Jeff Ament, Mike McCready and Stone Gossard are a part of – like Mother Love Bone, Mad Season and Temple of the Dog.
- It became an instant favorite on the road. It won’t be around forever, but for now, it’s very cool.
- The Sirius XMU channel is all indie bands like Best Coast and the XX, which my daughter loves and I am growing to like and getting familiar with these new bands.
- And of course, I must have my Howard Stern fix.
- So if you road trip a lot, Sirius or XM is worth the price to have nationwide access to the same channels. Without having to listen to AM country stations in podunk little towns you drive through.

I used to be a huge Stern fan and listened every morning on my way to work. Then he went to Sirius and I was far too cheap to pay for what I had been getting for free. So it’s been, what, four years or so now since I’ve heard anything from him? He still as good as he used to be?
This is his 5th year on Sirius. I used to listen to him on regular radio when I was in Vegas and California. The show is different, most of it due to the uncensored nature, which is fun for the most part, but sometimes can be over the top. Content and discussion wise and his interview style are the same. Very entertaining most of the time, IMO. Not sure what’s going to happen after the next 18 live shows that remain for this year. He will most likely re-sign his contract on a year to year basis.
Eddie still looks good, but he’s no Grohl!
Seriously, Sirius rocks.
True, Eddie doesn’t hold a candle to Grohl, but he does rock. And so does Sirius.
I miss Howard Stern. I do have sirius and could listen to him but my kids are always in the car with me so I really can’t.
On our vacation this year it was pretty awesome to not lose radio stations all the time like we would have without it.
With Stern being completely uncensored, you have a valid reason for not listening in the car with the kids.
The special channels are limited time only? Why?
Most of it is due to they use an existing channel. Like the Pearl Jam channel is normally Jam_On, which covers bands like Phish and Widespread Panic. Would be nice if they could move it to a new channel and keep it around.
I love Sirius, going on 5 years now. I wish I had bought the lifetime subscription when it was offered. And I hope Stern stays on Sirius.
Next month will be 5 years for me. And I’ve loved each and every one of those 5 years. And yes, I wish I would have done the lifetime subscription, too. Guess we’ll see what Stern decides here in the next few weeks.
We’ve been thinking about subscribing but I keep forgetting to make the call. (I’m a bit like Kevin S… financially cautious.)
I think it’s worth it, especially if you travel by car a lot. They also have portable radios, too.
I’m using a Stiletto and bought an extra car kit so I can pop it out of my personal truck and into my work truck. Best thing I ever did. Makes the long drives at work go by much more quickly. I’m thinking of getting another car kit and putting it in the office and slapping an antenna outside. I’m too cheap to pay for online streaming 😉
I almost got a Stiletto, but ended up getting a good deal on a dedicated Sirius radio installed when I replaced my car stereo a few years ago.
The streaming used to be included, but they eliminated that earlier this year and it’s all paid now. That was upsetting. And I didn’t want to add to the $280 a year I pay for 2 subscriptions (my car and my wife’s)
We also have two subscriptions. The really upsetting part of eliminating streaming is that the Stiletto was advertised as having that feature included. It did, for awhile. I really thought they should grandfather in all the Stiletto users, but the bottom line was more important.
I sold all my shares of Sirius stock about 18 months ago. I see now that I would have done well to hold out a bit longer, but live and learn..
I still own 50 shares of Sirius stock. Hanging onto it to see what happens.
I had Sirius in my Jeep and renewed it a couple of times after the free year was over, but then decided to economize and got rid of it. My favorite listening was always the Derek & Romaine show on OutQ. It came onduring my drive home and was hilarious. I miss that, but not enough to pay for it again.
I’ve heard the OutQ show before. It is pretty funny. I also liked Jay Thomas on Sirius Stars.
Yeah, $13 a month (I pay by the year) can be a lot for just a couple of shows.
