New Depeche Mode
|The other day, Depeche Mode held a press conference and announced a tour for 2013. Looks like only Europe dates so far, but then the above video was posted over on their VEVO channel.
It’s quite catchy even if it’s a collage of sorts. My assessment from the above is that it sounds evolved. It’s got that DM sound with some modern twists on their brooding beats. Also, I see from all of the various photos on their web site, there’s no sign of a return for Alan Wilder. Which is a small shame, as that would have been cool to see him back in the band. Although, that might have also signaled the end of the band… like a final reunion.
Any DM fans wish to chime in here, after you watch/listen to the above of course.

I’m reserving comment until I hear more. The rambling incoheasive “style” of the piece seems lacking to me given Dave Gahan’s amazing vocal talents. It’s like something that somebody with a poor singing voice would try in the hopes that style wins out over substance. Still… this is Depeche Mode. They rarely produce things I ultimately don’t end up loving, so it’s easy to give them the benefit of the doubt here.
This is my position as well. It’s new and it’s a work in progress and I’m excited to hear what the final album will sound like.
I was a little disappointed that the big announcement didn’t involve Alan. They appeared to have put a lot of their past behind them. They were all onstage together for that charity gig. And then Alan remixed one of their songs. And then there was that cryptic “never again was what you swore” post on their Facebook page. I had high hopes.
So did Hitler 😉
The lack of Alan Wilder was my disappointment, as I watched the above video, I kept trying to see if I could spot him in any of the clips. I do love that Hitler clip you linked to…. “where is fucking Alan Wilder?”
