All Things Cherry – Soda Edition
|Now that all of you know how much I love cherry-flavored food products, this post will not surprise you.
I love soda. And for years, I’ve drank a lot of soda. The last four years, I’ve had to cut back a lot, due to doctor’s orders. While I’ve felt healthier since doing so, I admit that I still love to have a soda every so often. And in today’s market, there is no shortage of soda types and flavors. Recently, there have been two cherry-flavored concoctions that caught my eye at the store and I thought I would try them to see if they passed my taste buds.
Cherry Crush
Cherry Crush
As a kid, I always loved Orange and Strawberry Crush. Getting a glass 16 oz. bottle at the corner store was a treat for me. I still find a bottle at the grocery store and “crush” all over again. There have been many types of Crush flavors over the years, in addition to the two afore-mentioned: Grape, Pineapple, Peach, Apple, Pear, Grapefruit, Lime… so when I saw this Cherry Crush, I had to buy it and try it.
First off, it’s pretty sweet… much sweeter than I was expecting. Strawberry Crush is sweet, too, but this had an extra kick of sweetness to it. The cherry flavor was good, though. Very natural tasting and something that I didn’t feel was some sort of “trying to be cherry” taste. Highly recommended if you are a Crush fan and are curious about trying this new flavor. I liked it and will buy this flavor again, but still, for purely nostalgic reasons, Strawberry Crush will always be my favorite.
Cherry Vanilla Pepsi
Cherry Vanilla Pepsi
In the cola wars, I’ve been a Coca-Cola fan ever since I can remember having my first cola-based soda. I’d try a Pepsi here and there, but it was always too sweet. In 1985, Cherry Coke came out and I loved it on the first taste. Pepsi responded a few years later with Wild Cherry Pepsi, and while it was ok, it was just too sweet. There have been other Cherry Vanilla sodas over the years, notably Cherry Vanilla Dr Pepper, which I really liked a lot. It’s been discontinued now, so the news from Pepsi that they would have a Cherry Vanilla soda got me curious to see what it was like.
It’s pretty sweet, like most Pepsi products are. But the taste and flavor is good. Nothing to rival the Cherry Vanilla Dr Pepper, but it’s still pleasing to my taste buds. It’s more vanilla than cherry, but that makes the two tastes go very well together. It’s got a small bite to it, but it does go down smoother than expected. Too bad it’s only around for eight weeks this summer. And it’s too bad they don’t make a sugar version of it. [replacing the high fructose corn syrup] Regardless, it’s something I will try again before it goes away, taking into consideration there is no Coke-variety equivalent to choose from.
What sodas have you tried and liked over the years? Have you tried the above two flavors? Thoughts and opinions welcome in the comments.
Cherry-anything is my least favorite flavor. I always end up tossing out the cherry Starburst and the cherry Tootsie-Pops and the like. Probably because I picked cherries in the local orchards for summer vacation cash while I was in school… and ended up sick of them? Probably.
Reminds me of Cherry Vodka and a bad high school spring break experience…
I am still a Mt. Dew lover. Can’t help it – I don’t drink coffee. Otherwise, I don’t really drink any other soft drinks. Oh, wait – I do like Diet Rite White Grape.
Cherry is my favorite flavor in most things too. I’m off sodas right now to appease my angry belleh except for a rare diet Hansen’s and Black Cherry is the one I like best. Have you tried the cherry-vanilla Dr. Pepper? We really liked that one.
I’m not really a Pepsi person as I’ve sworn my allegiance to Coca Cola in blood. Ahem, but I do love me some cherry. Cherry Coke Zero one of my all time fave drinks of, er, all time. Oh, and I agree with Lisa that Hansen’s Black Cherry is awesome.
dave2 – I remember our last discussion about your dislike for cherry-flavored food products. BTW, send me all of your cherry rejects. I will gladly consume them for you. 🙂
ren – Oh, I can just imagine that experience.
sybil law – Never heard of the White Grape soda. Sounds tasty… just add sugar. 😉
lisa – Yeah! Another cherry fan. I’ll have to try that Hanson’s soda. And I have had the Cherry Vanilla Dr Pepper. It was very tasty.
kevin – I’ve never had the Cherry Coke Zero. I did try the regular Coke Zero and didn’t like it – a bit too diet for my tastes. And another vote for Hanson Black Cherry.
I’m not a fruit flavored soda kind of gal. But, I think you have to find a place that serves old school fountain sodas and will make you a cherry Coke. I’m pretty sure none other compares.
nilsa – I love finding those old-fashioned soda fountains that add flavors to soda. Hires Big H is a root beer/burger place here in SLC that adds flavors to their root beer. Vanilla root beer is a favorite of mine.
Wow, I thought I was the only cherry soda fan! Actually, Cherry Crush goes back to the 60s, but went national in 2009. I spent years, traveling up and down the west coast, looking for Cherry Crush, or ANY Cherry Soda. Naturally, I came up dry. I did find plenty of Peach Crush in Phoenix, and it was awesome. I did fine ONE bottle of Regent Cherry Soda at a closeout store, and it was delicious. For some reason, though, most people don’t like cherry, and prefer those three stupid flavors, EVERY company puts out, Orange, Grape, and Strawberry. Gee, how creative!
Of course, Cherry Crush didn’t last long, nationally, and it was completely discontinued a few years back. I thought Cherry Crush was so-so, but was super pumped to actually see it in grocery stores. A couple years later, Fanta Cherry Soda came out nationally, and let me tell you, OMG!!! To this day, the best cherry soda I’ve ever had, hands down. There are actually quite a few cherry sodas on Amazon, but prepared to pay big time for shipping. The one I recommend the most is Red Ribbon Cherry Soda, in glass bottles. Excellent.
Since we are talking cherry flavor, there’s one water enhancer, that I’m addicted to. Starburst Cherry! It is a smooth, yet tart, flavor. I go through ten bottles per week, as I use 18 drops in my water bottle. I also use it on ice-cream. It’s on Amazon, too. Incredible cherry flavor!
Welcome to the blog. I agree on the Fanta Cherry. I got to try it when I was last in Florida. I liked it a lot.
