Throwback Thursday – NES Mini

The new retro looking Nintendo Classic Edition aka NES Mini

For today’s TBT post, I’m using something announced recently, yet retro looking from many years ago. A good 30+ years to be exact.

Nintendo announced the Nintendo Classic Edition, which is a non-cartridge based game system with 30 games built in, including Super Mario Bros 1, 2 and 3. It’s being dubbed the NES Mini, which according to this article and related video, it’s a much smaller version of the original NES system released back in 1985.

The system will be available for purchase on November 11, 2016 – just in time for the holiday shopping season. The price is $59.95 USD.

The Original

The original NES still owned by my daughter

As it turns out, I still have access to the original NES, which belongs to my daughter. To this day, it works great, with the appropriate adapter for today’s HD TVs that mostly have HDMI connectors on them. The new NES Mini has an HDMI adapter built in, which makes for easy plug and play.

Atari Flashback

Nintendo is new at the consolidated self-contained gaming systems that don’t require separate cartridges for games. Atari has been making the Flashback systems for years. I own the Flashback 4, which has 76 games built-in. It’s fun to play these retro games, which look similar to their original consoles.

My guess is that Nintendo will make a killing this holiday season. Guess we shall see.
