Hey, what do you know… it snowed recently. And today is Sunday. Must be time for a brand new Snowy Sunday video.

Happy New Year

It’s a new year and not only does that mean snow on a regular basis [at least we hope so], but it also means weekly videos out here – each and every Sunday [sometimes bright and early, other times as late as this one is getting posted].

I also am going to make better efforts to post out here more often. This twice a week thing is getting to me, and I’m getting behind on posts that I wanted to post out here before now. I’m not really lazy… honest. I just let too much get in the way…. and trust me… that’s pretty easy to do.

So let’s hope I can get more posts out each week for 2009. Wish me luck.

  1. Dave2 says:

Lucky you didn’t end up straddling one of those posts in a very uncomfortable position!

  2. martymankins says:

dave2 – Oh yeah… those posts kept getting closer with each run down the hill.

  3. Blimey, I haven’t been sledding since I was a kid. How much fun was that? There was one point there where I thought you were going into that tree for sure ;-)

  4. martymankins says:

kevin – Brings back memories, doesn’t it? I did some sledding as a kid, but growing up in Southern Calif. there wasn’t much snow. It was a lot of fun… and yes, that tree got a bit closer each time.

  5. Xisor says:

Had to of been difficult to balance the tripod as well as yourself.

  6. Penelope says:

That is the best fun! I wondered about the posts and the trees too but I guess an “old guy” like you can steer quite well ;)

  7. I always stop when the brightness of the snow starts to hurt my eyes.

We haven’t had a good day to sled yet…one day was a high of negative 4 or something and not safe for the kids to be out, and the rest of the really snowy days were either school days (and I considered calling them in sick to have some fun but then went the responsible parent route) or so snowy and still snowing so it was dangerous to drive. I am hoping we get to go soon though! You are lucky to have that hill all to yourself! Where we go I have never seen it empty like that.

  8. martymankins says:

xisor – Actually, the legs of the tripod fit into the grooves on the sled. It was pretty stable… just had to hold it.

penelope – Thanks. My advancing age affords me the experience of steering out of danger (for the most part) ;-)

tori – It was very bright out yesterday. I had my sunglasses on at the beginning, but needed to take them off because I couldn’t see the camera screen properly.

Hoping you guys get some good sledding days. It’s a lot of fun. The hill is normally packed with tons of kids, but early Sunday morning is empty for the first hour or so. As I was leaving, there were a few kids with their sleds walking up.

  9. breakaway9 says:

Which hill was that it looks like the one right off 123rd and 10th east….

  10. martymankins says:

breakaway9 – This hill is close to my house, just east of Jordan Parkway off Bullion, near giant power lines (close to where Sean use to live off Walden Wood)

  11. Ren says:

I miss good snow. There’s a pretty good chance that we won’t go skiing this year, making it the first such year since 2003 and potentially the first year without visiting any *real* snow since 2002. Much sadness.

  12. martymankins says:

ren – Sorry you will miss this season. I know Utah is getting some really good snow in the mountains. So is a lot of resorts in Colorado. Much sadness indeed.

  13. whall says:

I’m with Ren. All I want is a good foot of snow. No demon ice storm, no sleet or freezing rain. No blizzard. Just a day or two in Austin with a foot of fluffy, fun snow.

  14. martymankins says:

whall – If I could ship this out, I’d send you a big truck load. But for some reason, it changes form and consistency before it reaches its destination.

I guess for now, you’ll have to hope it snows a lot in Austin. Sending snow karma your way.

  15. kapgar says:

I want to do a video of us sledding with Lilly on the sled with us. The ASPCA won’t come after me for that, will they?

  16. martymankins says:

kapgar – Now that’s a video I’d like to see. Nope, you’ll be safe, so long as Lilly doesn’t jump out mid-way down the hill and take a tumble… Maybe put her bed or a thick pillow on the sled and head down.

  17. SJ says:

Whew, actually got a bit of motion sickness! Great job on these, and I notice we have very similar taste in music.

  18. martymankins says:

sj – Yeah, as many runs as I did that day, I started to get a bit dizzy.

  19. kilax says:

I’ve been wanting to go sledding all winter! I need to go get a sled. We have LOTS of snow…

  20. martymankins says:

kilax – Sleds are pretty cheap… most sporting good stores have nice ones for under $20 (on sale). Take advantage of that snow before it’s gone.
