New Flavor, meet Trusted Brand 24

I like certain kinds of treats and candy, but I also get curious about trying out new flavors of existing candy. Over the course of the last couple of months, I’ve found some new twists on old brands and decided to try them out. I rate each one, how I liked it and if I will be purchasing them in the future, assuming they don’t get discontinued.

Reese’s Peanut Butter and Banana Creme cups
Reese's Peanut Butter & Banana cups
“No thank you… no Thank you very much”

I have been eating Reese’s since I was a kid. Love them. They are easy to eat and assuming it’s not 106 degrees outside, they are not that messy. The last few years, there’s been a few variations on the tried and true peanut butter cup, like white chocolate and Reese’s Pieces [which I love just as much] . But this flavor caught my eye at the store and I had to take a look. It’s Elvis endorsed… they had to be good, right?

Wrong. They are horrible. Peanut butter with banana flavor and way too sweet was not a good mix. Maybe Elvis collectors would want the package for collecting [or store it in their freezer for decades for a future eBay sale].

Rating – .5 [out of a possible 5]

Will I Buy These Again? Fuck no. I’m sticking to the original flavor I know and like.

Chocolate Skittles
Chocolate Skittles
All of the flavors found in the kitchen, in candy form

I first heard of these from Dave over at Blogography. Based on how cool he thought they were, I made the leap and bought a couple of packages. Damn. These are good. Very good. Much better than I was expecting. Artificial flavors sometimes have a way of not being anywhere near what product they claim to taste like. The candy creators at Skittles have turned what their taste buds know into something great. As with Dave, my favorite ended up being the chocolate pudding. Pudding… how can you go wrong with that?

Will I Buy These Again? Hell yes. You bet I will. A nice treat that’s not messy and very tasty.

Mint Crisp M&Ms
Mint Crisp M&Ms
Did Indy discover small chocolate candies in his search of artifacts?

Crispy M&Ms have been around for a while, until they disappeared from the market over a year ago. I like them and my daughter likes them even more than I do. So when these Mint Crisp Indiana Jones-themed candies made their way to stores a month ago, I wanted to try them. That is, if I could find them. Seems that hoards of people loved the Crispy M&Ms (and Indy, too) that they were hard to find anywhere. Fortunately, my daughter found a store that had a few bags, and she gave one of them to me.

These were very good. Nice minty taste and that crispy texture makes them easy to eat.

Rating – 4.5 [out of a possible 5]

Will I Buy These Again? If they stick around and get easier to find, I will get some bags and have them around.

Strawberry Milkshake Cream Oreos
Strawberry Milkshake Oreos
“I EAT YOUR MILKSHAKE…. flavored Oreos”

My favorite Oreo is the Double Stuf. It was double the white creamy filling that I used to scrape off each side of the chocolate wafers as a kid that got me hooked. I’ve not really tried any of the other Oreos in the last few years, but got curious last week when I found these. I normally like all things cherry flavored, but there are some strawberry-flavored products I will consume [Strawberry Quik – the milk, not this version – is one].

These were not all that bad. They had an odd aftertaste, which is normally associated with Sugar-free products, but after checking the label to make I was getting the real deal, I decided it was probably the artificial flavoring that was the culprit.

Rating – 4 [out of a possible 5]

Will I Buy These Again? Maybe. I’d still prefer the Double Stuf Oreos over these.

Those mint M&M’s are the shit… ooops hope this isn’t a family blog…. wait Marty has been dropping a few F bomb’s so I should be fine… I bought about 20 bags at the M&M store in vegas about two months ago…. they were awesome.

I am curious about the Oreos now, I will have to look for them they look very good.

I have tried everything you named except for the oreos because I do not like oreos. I LOVED the elvis peanut butter cups, did not like the skittles, and did not like the mint crisp m&m’s. So I guess we are opposite, which is good if we ever find ourselves geographically near each other and with a big pile of candy because then we would definitely each get what we wanted. Good to know.

We picked up the Indy Jones mint M&M’s this last week also – I’m not a mint fan, but my wife is. I have yet to find out the report.

I tried “Take 5” a couple of years ago due to the same candy curiosity. Candiosity.

OMG. I HATE bananas. GROSS. I did, however, love the dark chocolate cherry M&Ms I got around Easter time. I shoulda bought the whole box of them in Walgreens.

avitable – OMG.. that video cracked me up. I loved how you got all of the centers into one Oreo.

kris – I figured the M&M World in Vegas would have them. And I should have had you try a couple of the Oreos at the house the other day. We still have half a bag left.

tori – Wow.. we are opposite. So if we ever did hang out with a plethora of candy, we don’t need to share… 🙂

whall – I’ve seen the “Take 5” at the store, but haven’t tried one yet.

winter – Dark Chocolate Wild Cherry M&Ms are really, really good. I tried some last year and really liked them a lot. I wish I would have bought more of those. I regularly eat the dark chocolate M&Ms. Not much of a milk chocolate fan.

Mint crisp M&Ms?? Oh nooooooooo! I want some and I know damn well we don’t have them over here and you can bet your life we won’t get them! Damn you and your minty crispy M&M tastiness!

  • kilax

“Will I Buy These Again? Fuck no.” Best. Quote. Ever. Ha ha! I love all your little captions.

I am always afraid to try new candy flavors. That is dumb. You made those chocolate skittles sounds awesome. I need to get a pack…

  • Motley

It’s too bad that I rarely eat any sort of candy product. And even more rarely buy one.

Another good one is the Strawberry Milkshake Whoppers. I looooove Whoppers and was kinda sketchy with the Strawberry Milkshake version, but my mom bought a box and they were AWESOME.

Unfortunately, the only kind of chocolate I really like is dark chocolate and that stuff is expensive!

penelope – I checked the M&Ms official web site and it says no delivery outside the US… 🙁

kilax – Thanks for the props of the captions. I have fun trying to be clever, maybe not as clever as Shiny is. You will have to let me know how you like the Chocolate Skittles.

motley – I’ve seen those Whoppers in the store. I’m going to have to pick some up now that I know someone else tried them and likes them.

  • Beth

I haven’t seen the Banana Reese’s yet. Sounds weird. The whole Peanut Butter and Nanner sandwiches is definately not based on Sugared Peanut Butter, so I don’t see how those could be good!

  • Winter

Motley and I both are not lovers of milk chocolate either. And she neglected to say that I bought the Strawberry Whoppers on Avitable’s advice. I got partway through the box and couldn’t handle any more sweet so I gave them to Motley. I think she liked them more than I did. I just want more cherry M&Ms.

  • martymankins Post author

dmarks – It almost killed me, that’s for sure.

beth – I never got the whole banana/peanut butter thing with Elvis. The only sweet banana treat I like are Banana Twinkees. You don’t see them too often.

winter – Avitable… the lover of all things good. Looking for more cherry M&Ms at my next store visit.

  • Kevin Spencer

Those mint M&Ms are all kinds of yummy. I found those the other day. Interesting that they used the younger Harrison Ford for the promo though 😉

Will be on the lookout for those Strawberry Oreos. Bugger I’m hungry now.

  • radioactive tori

So since the consensus from everyone seems to be that I am the only person who likes those elvis peanut butter cups, you can all just send them to me when you see them. I’d be very happy to have a big stash of them and they are sort of hard to find near me.

  • martymankins Post author

kevin – I didn’t notice that until you said something. That is the younger Harrison Ford. Guess current Harrison may not have been sending the right marketing message. 😉

blondblogger – I’ve not seen the white chocolate Reese’s in a while. Will have to find them and Reese’s Pieces soon.

tori – Guess are you the only one that likes them. I do like bananas with chocolate and peanuts when they are part of an ice cream sundae… does that count? 🙂

  • Nilsa

I’ve been meaning to stop by for quite some time. As you can see, I’m a slacker and it takes forever to get my act together.

I love me some mint M&M’s. You’re making my mouth water. And you’re challenging me NOT to go to my freezer where there might be some mint ice cream calling my name. I’m stronger than that. I will resist the urge…
