Retro: Doritos Taco Flavor
|
Nacho your regular cheesy Doritos flavor
Who doesn’t like Doritos? OH YOU DON’T, HUH?? Well then wait for the next blog post. For those who are Doritos fans, here’s a blast from the past. I saw this bag in the store a couple weeks ago and had to buy them.
I’m normally all about the Nacho Cheese flavor or even the Cool Ranch flavor will do, but the Taco flavor was one of the original flavors, even before Nacho Cheese made it’s debut in 1972.
The Taco flavor chips are very good. Pretty close to what I remember them being when I was a kid. But there were two other Taco flavored variants that I liked even better. In the 1990’s, Doritos partnered with Taco Bell to create the Taco Supreme flavor of chips. Tasted just like eating a Taco Supreme, with the salsa, sour cream and all of the fixings. I LOVED this flavor, but alas, it was not to last. Limited time only. Before I knew it, I came up empty handed when grocery shopping.
But wait… in 2009, Doritos heard the complaints of all of us that loved this flavor and created “Tacos At Midnight”

The taste was very close to the Taco Supreme flavor from the 90’s. So much, that I started to draft up my “Dear John” letter to the Nacho Cheese and Cool Ranch flavors. But once again, the short-sighted product manager people at Frito-Lay deemed these “Limited Time” and before I knew it, they were not to be found on store shelves [at least here in Utah].
So for now, we have another “Limited Time” brand in the Taco flavor, so we’ll see if they last more than a few months. Just in case, I have 6 bags of them stashed to hold me over.
What’s your favorite Doritos flavor?
It’s a tie: Spicy Nacho and the Spicy Sweet Chili. I tried some Dragon wasabi ones and hated them. Other than those, I <3 all Doritos.
I’ve tried the Spicy Nacho before. It’s got a nice kick to it. Will have to seek out the Sweet Chili flavor.
I have a bag of the Taco Doritos that I picked up last night. Mine doesn’t say Limited Edition on the top though. And it is nowhere to be found on the Frito-Lay website. They are good…not nearly as good as the original taco flavor that was discontinued decades ago. Sadly.
I think they changed the packaging already, to something of a dark red bag. I prefer the retro packaging as it distinguishes them from the other red-bagged Doritos flavors.
I have never been able to eat Doritos. So salty they burn! And: Too dusty. I would maybe eat Cheetos every once in a while, but! Too dusty. I like these: http://bit.ly/SpicyThai 😀
You got the dusty right. I have to keep a wet paper towel nearby if I am eating Doritos or Cheetos while using a computer. Nothing worse than a cheesy keyboard.
Will have to try those chips you linked to. They look tasty.
As a true lady of the eighties (well, teen anyway), I am all about Cool Ranch Doritos still. My second fave would totally be the original taco flavor!
You are in good company.. Cool Ranch are Reba’s favorite.
I like the “mix” bags that have a mix of Nacho Cheese and Cool Ranch. Or something like that. They’re excellent for people like me who have a hard time making up their mind!
The mixed bags are pretty good. They’ve had so many different flavors mixed together, but I do like the Nacho Cheese/Cool Ranch mix.
I just like whatever the regular Doritos are…
You mean these:
Great with salsa or guac dip.
I miss that old Doritos logo. As for favorites, I gotta go with the good ol’ nacho cheese flavor with Cool Ranch right behind it. Not much for chip change.
When I saw the old logo, it took me back. Of course, got to love when these companies go back to their familiar logos that I knew growing up.
The tacos at midnight flavor is awesome. Good lord I haven’t had Doritos in ages. Must fix that immediately.
Hey, another Tacos at Midnight fan. Do they still have them in stores in your area?
The Cheeseburger!
I’ve tried that flavor and admit that they are not that bad.
Please please please let regular, plain Doritos be sold back in Douglas county , Oregon . They claim it is discontinued. Please bring it back, I have looked in every store in roseburg, Oregon. Please, Sherry winters
That would be nice to have the original flavor of Doritos return.
