And Here We Are

That blog post title is a take on the title of the last Foo Fighters album.
Let’s jump right in for some life updates here.
Laid Off
On September 30, 2024, I was laid off from the company I worked at for 9 years and 7 months. It was a company RIF and I was part of it.
I was already burnt out in what I was doing which was managing a data center and many legacy platforms. I was also managing many AWS instances and was working on many current product projects.
Was I expecting this? To some degree, yes. I had a few signs that it was possible. But being the only employee here in Salt Lake an being on site at a data center (I worked about 90% remotely), I had that false hope that I was safe. As for how I am handling this change, I am really good. I am applying for jobs that match my current skills. Last month I crossed that 39 years as a system admin so there is that.
I have enough severance to take me into the first part of 2025. My goal is to get a job sooner so I can keep more of my severance. Other than on Threads, I haven’t made this news more public. Just sharing with friends that I have known for years and hoping that I can get some leads in addition to the several jobs boards I am on.
Dating
Yes, I am dating but not on any dating sites or using any dating apps. As I posted in August after I turned 61, My wife and I divorced and I had met someone that I felt was going to be a great thing. Ten days later, she decided she wasn’t ready. It was more complicated that just that. Let’s just say that I learned about trauma triggers and being the innocent party not knowing what they were, I hit a very minor one. We do not talk and I haven’t seen her in over 2 months. Yeah, it ended weird.
Currently, I have four women in various stages and forms of relationships. One is just a friend where we go to concerts, Jazz games and hang out watching sports at the bar. Another is one who kissed me at a bar one night a few weeks ago. I’ve only heard back from her once. Another was one I met at a friend’s house a month ago in Preston, ID. No date has happened with her. Just friendly texts back and forth a couple of times a week.
The last person is someone I met at the Korn concert a week ago. We have been on two dates that have lasted 3 hours each time. Going to let this one take a slower course, but so far, I like this person enough to want to spend more time with.
Marty’s a playa! I keed. I keed. I’m happy for you, dude. Sorry about the job but it sounds like you’ve got a good attitude and a great skill set so I’m hoping for it to all turn around in the best possible way. You deserve it, Marty.
LOL… that’s funny. Yeah, I am not even trying to find anyone. They just show up. I mean, I obviously have to make some efforts like ask for their phone number.
Thanks on the job encouragement. Something will happen here soon.
