After a very neutral post I put out Facebook this past Sunday:
My silence on Facebook doesn’t mean I’m silent #muslimban
I’ve decided enough is enough. I’ve talked about my dislike for the toxic atmosphere I see on Facebook here on this blog and I avoided posting anything political for a long time to make things more tolerable out there. I’ve unfollowed those who constantly post divisive posts and I scroll past the rest of them who post occasionally.
But when I use a label “Muslim ban” uttered by several people in the Trump camp that gets his ardent and unapologetic supporters to refuse to admit he and others said it, even after they have back peddled their statements now saying otherwise, I realize that my opinions, thoughts and positions do not matter to the Trump defenders.
Most hated everything Obama and Hillary did, to the point where the above image at the top of this post is apparently what they see each and every day they walked out of their homes and into the world. I don’t recall Obama being that horrible in the 8 years he was in office. Not even close. I’m curious what view they now see with Trump in office.
For me to think about posting any of my thoughts to something they posted is knowing that I will get a brash of replies where they are never wrong or their post meant to clarify their position or to see their fan base playing the ignorant card or the name calling card. Yes, there are civil conversations and replies and I appreciate those when they happen.
But you know, I just don’t want to deal with it anymore. I’m not as thick-skinned as I should be and until I can feel like Facebook removes it’s toxic overlay, I’m going to be using it as a place to keep up with people’s families, friends and life happenings once a week. As I’ve said on previous Facebook rant blog post here, my time needs to be spent doing other things anyway.
I love this country and I don’t want it to fail under any president, regardless if I support them or not. But I really don’t want to see any of my social media relationships with friends or family get destroyed over differences between who either of us support for president. I have my opinions and this is my place to express them. And I am hoping to keep it that way for the long haul.
