Moving Into New Territory

This episode was done entirely in Apple’s Final Cut Express 4.0. Pretty much every episode before today’s was done in iMovie 06. There were some small segments that I did in Final Cut Express 4, but they were exported out and imported into iMovie 06. As I move towards this new platform for creating my video work, you will most likely see some changes. Most of them will be for the better, but until I get my feet wet completely, some things may look a bit rough. So bear with me as I make this move. Before long, I’ll be just as well versed in FCE 4 as I am in iMovie 06.

Why not iMovie 08

I’m sure a few of you may be asking yourself, “Why didn’t he just move to iMovie 08?” And that’s a good question. To be honest, I did try it out but I quickly became frustrated trying to do the basic steps of bringing in video and moving it around. Simply put, I need the video timeline that is in iMovie 06 and Final Cut Express 4. I’ve gotten used to editing with the timeline and it’s made putting these videos together mostly painless. At the same time, I will be learning Final Cut Express 4, which is a step towards Final Cut Pro, a platform that I’ve always planned to eventually make the move to.

Lucky you cut the split screen before the car drove by. 😉

I think the only thing that might’ve made this better would’ve been to have a fake talking mouth superimposed on Kent Brockman like what Conan O’Brien does all the time. Heh. 😉

  • Sybil Law

    Yeah!!! Kent Brockman!
I almost said, “Hey! I remember him from such films as, ” Get Some Confidence, Stupid!” – but then I remembered that was Troy McClure. Haha
I love the duplicity, Mr. Fancy Pants!

kapgar – It’s all about the timing (and multiple takes 😉

I actually thought of doing that same thing, but I didn’t want Snowy Sunday to end up Snowy Tuesday Ep. 002. Let’s see what I can do in one of the remaining 4 episodes of Snowy Sunday.

sybil law – Thanks. And who could resist Kent when doing a news story based episode.

I haven’t even looked at the latest version of iMovie, having been completely soured by the previous version (I’m still using the iMovie 06 downgrade for small stuff… Final Cut Pro for the big stuff).

I agree with kapgar, the super-imposed mouth would of been awesome. Marty: way to stick with the FC products it will all pay-off. Everything you learn now will totally translate to FC.

Fun! But where’s the drunk dude in the background just trying to make it in the frame!!? That always happens on our local news!

I SHOULD TOTALLY GET A MAC SO I CAN DO COOL VIDEOS LIKE THAT!!! oh wait I have one I could use.

Seriously, though. Awesome editing. Is that final minority report cut polar express software or whatever it’s called free or what?

beth – Oh yeah… I know that ‘dude’ you are talking about. I may have to incorporate that into a future episode.

whall – Nope. Not free. Amazon has it for $149 (it retails for $199). Well worth it for all of the cool pro-type of edits and tools it comes with. Final Cut Studio (which I plan to move to eventually) is $1300. Yeah, OUCH! For now, $149 gets me something with pro-like editing and for about a tenth of the cost.

penelope – Wow. Thank you for the props. I try to please my readers.

geeky tai-tai – Thank you. Final Cut Express is a learning curve… not so much awkward as iMovie 08 is, but it’s pretty powerful. As for the iMovie 06 thing, did that download work for you? If not, let me know and I can get the download file to you.
