I stoled this from Adam. Well, just the survey questions.

If the whole world were listening to you right now, what would you say?

Calm the fuck down. Stop hating others not like you. Relax and pour yourself a drink.

If you could meet anyone on this earth, who would it be?

John Cusack

You just got a free plane ticket to anywhere. You have to depart right now. Where are you gonna go?

Newport Beach, CA

What do you think about most?

making videos, writing novels, taking time off.

You have the opportunity to spend a romantic night with the music celebrity of your choice. Who would it be?

Lily Allen

You can erase any horrible experience from your past. What will it be?

My work experience in 1996 at Pioneer Valley Hospital. I might blog about this in the future – in complete detail.

What’s your strangest talent?

I can talk like Droopy Dog by pinching the right side of my mouth.

What would be a question you’d be afraid to tell the truth on?

How do you really feel about _____________ ? (insert several people’s names here)

Ever had a poem or song written about you?

Not that I know about.

When is the last time you played the air guitar?

Last Tuesday during bowling league after getting a strike.

Do you have any strange phobias?

A fear of heights.

What’s your religion?

Non-believer. I used to belong to organized religion, but left it many years ago when I realized I didn’t believe in it and couldn’t live that life anymore, trying to be something that I would never be and never wanted to become.

What is your current desktop picture?

a plain light gray background on my MacBook Pro running OS X Lion.

When you are outside, what are you most likely doing?

Wishing I could stay outside longer (assuming it’s warm and sunny)

What’s the last song you listened to?

“Tongue Tied” by Grouplove

Favorite band?

Depeche Mode

What was the last lie you told?

Monday at 11:35am “I will take care of that in a few minutes”

Do you believe in karma?

For the most part, yes.

What is a saying you say a lot?

Sounds good. Have fun. Talk to you in a bit. All conversation closers.

What is your greatest weakness; your greatest strength?

Weakness: I let others control me too much. Strength: I make people smile

Who is your celebrity crush?

All time: Cindy Crawford. Current: too many to list. I can tell you that Megan Fox is NOT on the list.

Give me the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word: heart.

Fragile

How do you vent your anger?

Playing loud hard music. Marilyn Manson, NIN, Slayer, Judas Priest

Do you have a collection of anything?

Anything penguin, LEGOs, Wacky Packages

What is your favorite word?

A few days ago, Hilly, freshly posting blog posts on her new online digs, asked many of us to submit a phrase or wish for her post for Dave’s birthday. Here’s what I said:

“The only way to complete the ultimate experience of attending a Depeche Mode concert is to have Dave there with you. Happy Birthday, Dave and thanks for making Dave Lake City 3 the best so far.”

Which is totally true. And here’s your proof:

See, I only speak the truth.

It’s been some time since I’ve done a list of top albums and it seems appropriate to end this year with a list of my favorite albums of 2009.

I will also include a few that I bought that missed the top ranking, as well as some that I still need to go out and get. The top entries are in the order of when they were released.

So with that, here’s my 2009 list:

Lily Allen “It’s Not You, It’s Me”

My daughter introduced me to Lily Allen, who I had heard of, but had never heard her music before. So I bought this sophomore release and was hooked. Of course, the two stand out tracks here are “The Fear” and “Fuck You”, which pretty much says to other young female artists to step it up a few notches if they want to have an outstanding album.

Depeche Mode “Sounds Of The Universe”

Most of you know I am a huge Depeche Mode fan. I’ve seen them multiple times in concert and there’s not that many songs or albums of theirs that I don’t like. This year’s release was a pretty strong effort by the band and songs like “Wrong” and “In Sympathy” made me love this band even more.

Phoenix “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix”

I was rather surprised that this was their fourth album. Where the hell have I been? Obviously not listening to this band. Tracks like “Lisztomania” and “1901″ only cement the love for playing this entire album from start to finish.

Chickenfoot “Chickenfoot”

I discovered this album early on in the year and I was instantly hooked. You take Sammy and Michael from Van Halen, add in Joe Satriani and Chad Smith to the mix and you have some kick ass tunes. “Soap On A Roap” and “Turnin’ Left” are just the tip of the iceberg for this hot new super group.

Killswitch Engage “Killswitch Engage”

One of the few metalcore bands that I really like released a new album this year. It’s self-titled [their second of their career... confusing to say the least] and it’s good… really good. Tracks like “Starting Over” and “The Forgotten” are melodic and hard-edged starting points to the greatness of the entire album.

Pearl Jam “Backspacer”

Pearl Jam was one of those bands that had to grow on me. But once they did, their grunge-like sound stuck. And while their self-titled release a few years ago wasn’t one of their better releases, they redeemed themselves with “Backspacer.” Stand out tracks like “The Fixer” and “Amongst The Waves” prove they still have got the musical touch.

Alice In Chains “Black Gives Way To Blue”

There has never been a band like Alice In Chains. So imagine my apprehension when they decide to release a new album with a new lead singer, William DuVall. Well, after many listens, this has proven to be really good. True Layne Staley fans may be bothered by him being replaced, but they should take a listen to songs like “Check My Brain” and “A Looking In View” and they may feel better about this return.

Them Crooked Vultures “Them Crooked Vultures”

Another super group? Did we really need another one? Before you shake your head in disagreement, you may want to listen to their debut album. Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and John Paul Jones [of Led Zeppelin] make this release a must listen. Songs like “New Fang” and “Mind Eraser, No Chaser” are just a couple of the 13 tracks that make this album rock.

Down A Few Rungs

And there were some albums that I bought that just didn’t grab me or they promised more than I thought they produced.

U2 “No Line On The Horizon”

U2 is one of my favorite bands and over their career, they have released some incredible albums. This was not one of them. Sure there were some catchy songs like “Get Your Boots On” and “Moment Of Surrender”, but overall, it was a snoozer for this fan.

Muse “The Resistance”

Muse have proven they are an incredibly talented band. Musically, they’ve released several albums that have been fan favorites. But there is something lacking in this latest release. Sure, their trademark sound is here, but there are many weak tracks on this album that just didn’t seem as strong as they could have been.

Green Day “21st Century Breakdown”

Green Day is one of those bands that I’ve always liked. And “American Idiot” was a great album and one that plays well from start to finish, telling a great story. But when you try to tell another story from start to finish on a new album, it may just start to feel the same. This album did just that. There were some great songs, but the melody sounded way too similar… almost like they were phoning it in. They did redeem themselves by being great in concert, though.

Grizzly Bear “Veckatimest”

I really did try to like this album. Lots of people loved it and praised it over and over. Even my daughter talked about how great it is. But I have to be honest that I didn’t completely fall in love with it, even after half a dozen listens. That doesn’t mean I hate it. On the contrary, but just not enough to make it a top candidate.

Albums I Need To Get Still

And there are a few releases that I need to pick up still, lauded by my daughter and others.

Silversun Pickups “Swoon”

I know my daughter has this album because she loves this band. I’ve heard a few songs from this album and liked them just as much as I did the tracks from their first release, “Carnavas.” Guess I need to get this latest release from my daughter.

Passion Pit “Manners”

I like some electronic dance music. LCD Soundsystem is one of my favorites. So after listening to several of the tracks on this album, I put it on my “must have” list. I still don’t have it, but I’m about to change that before the year ends.

Cage The Elephant “Cage The Elephant”

Grant Ruby, a friend and a DJ at local radio station 101.9 FM The End, has praised this album both on his blog and on the air. I’ve got one song “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked” and I like it. Now I need to get the album to hear what other great songs I’ve been missing out on.

Pet Shop Boys “Yes”

I’ve been a fan of the Pet Shop Boys since their mid-80′s debut. I’ve had most of their albums over the years and they have never strayed from being great. Thanks to Dave from Blogography’s praise, this is an album that I will eventually own.

White Rabbits “It’s Frightening”

I really like the song “Percussion Gun” and have heard the rest of the album is just as good. I just need to go get the album and see for myself if the other tracks stand out just as great.

Best of Decade

There you have it – my 2009 list of albums that were great, not so great and ones I have yet to get. I also plan to do a best of decade list. That one is a bit more difficult to put together, but I’ll make sure it gets posted as soon I’m done.

So did I leave anything off? Put one on my list you think sucked? Comment away.

It has happened again.

YouTube has censored another one of my videos. Nope, not another Scooter or Snowy Sunday video. This time is was concert footage from a show I went to this year.

Back in September, I went to see The Psychedelic Furs live here in Salt Lake at a small club. Even got to meet them afterwards, which was nice. And as I normally do, I had my digital camera with me and took some photos and a short video clip.

I’ve posted clips of concert footage before from other shows and have never had any warnings or notices until now. Here’s the first notice I got in my email:

Emailed notice of copyright infringement

Clicking through to my YouTube account, I was greeted with the following notice:

I had to click the Acknowledge button to get into my account

Here’s the offending footage that YouTube removed (which I uploaded to Vimeo, hoping they won’t yank it):

Psychedelic Furs – 9/12/09 – Salt Lake City, UT from Marty Mankins on Vimeo.

Puzzled and Confused

Obviously, I’m a bit concerned as I don’t want to be have my YouTube account disabled or removed. So I decided to do a bit of research to see if there were other videos by Psychedelic Furs that were removed. Imagine my surprise to find another video of concert footage uploaded from the October NYC show, which still remains online.

What The Fuck? Why is mine taken down while this video gets to stay? Is it that the quality is better? Surely it can’t be that the video is too short, as this footage is most of the song. Mine was just a couple of minutes of the song.

And I found another one from the Philadelphia show two days before the NYC show:

Quality wise, this guys video is so-so, but yet it’s not the video that YouTube is taking issue with. It’s the music. And I really think this is coming from RIAA or the bands record label, not directly from the band, as the notice states.

I was under the impression that the copyright issue didn’t apply to concert footage that you personally shoot on your own camera. But according to YouTube’s video upload page, they now include “music concerts” as content to avoid uploading. Yet, my concert footage clips from Pearl Jam, Green Day and Depeche Mode remain on my page, with no issues or warnings.

Which is why I am further confused about what gets to stay and what gets removed on YouTube.

And which is why I will make even more efforts to further reduce what I upload to YouTube.

Has it really been almost two weeks since I posted out here? I’m either lazy, busy, relaxed or a combination of all three.

I love going to concerts. My first was Van Halen in 1982 and I’ve been to many shows in the last 27 years. I lost count on how many bands I’ve seen live, but I can easily say it’s over 1,000 different bands… seriously. Just scanning my concert ticket stubs and thinking of all the show I don’t have a ticket stub for, that’s a safe amount.

But out of all of those many shows, there is one band that I’ve seen in concert nine times: Depeche Mode.

The band never ceases to amaze me with what kind of show they put on. From the first time I saw them live in 1986 during the “Black Celebration” tour until the most recent show of the Tour Of The Universe, Depeche Mode have been one of the most amazing, entertaining and talented bands I’ve seen perform on stage.

This most recent date, here in Salt Lake City, had an extra bonus: Dave from Blogography was in town to enjoy this show. While the concert went off without a hitch, the lead up to this show wasn’t without it’s concerns. The band was forced to cancel a few of its dates, including two California dates, just weeks before the SLC date.

All of us were nervous about the show – even up to the day before during Dave Lake City 3 at the Rio Grande Cafe, Dave and I both hoping that there wouldn’t be a last minute cancellation.

But there wasn’t.

This was also my daughter’s second time seeing Depeche Mode, her first time being in 1998 for the Singles Tour.

Who the hell is that dude behind us and why is he not excited for Depeche Mode?

All three of us waited in anticipation, with big smiles….

When Bad Monkey pushes the button, the show will begin.

Dave has already posted a great set list and his thoughts on each of the songs performed. As for my thoughts, I’m with Dave on just about everything he said, especially with the selection of “Jezebel”, which isn’t one of my favorites from the new album “Sounds Of The Universe”. As with Dave, I would have preferred “Home”, which is one of my favorite Martin Gore songs. But regardless of that weak moment, The show was spectacular. I didn’t even miss hearing “People Are People” or “Everything Counts” [which is one of my all time favorite songs to hear live]. It was that good of a show. And I was able to capture a good amount of photos with my camera. Here’s a selection from the Flickr set:

BONUS: Video

And here’s a video of some of “Policy Of Truth” that I was able to capture on my camera.

Green Day

Staged

Not to take away from the awesome show that was Depeche Mode live, I also recently went to another concert about a week before. Green Day played at Energy Solutions Arena [formerly known as the Delta Center] and put on a great show.

While sometimes blamed for getting too big and too popular and forgetting their punk roots, I have to admit that Billie Joe Armstrong has a great on-stage persona and is very good at building up audience participation. This was my third time seeing them live and I have never been bored or disappointed each of those times.

Here’s a selection of pics from my Flickr set from the concert on August 16, 2009:

QuickTime Plug In

In my ongoing issues with YouTube, I’ve decided that I needed to find another solution for posting videos. Sure, Vimeo is still a great choice, but I want to have another option ready to go in case they start caving to the thoughtless record company known as WMG.

I have decided to go with QuickTime. You will need to have QuickTime enabled on your browser(s) in order to view this. Every Mac user has this built-in, but Windows and Linux users may not. I will continue to upload to Vimeo, but should the hired goons find their way to that site, then the QuickTime option will be the only option I will provide.

QuickTime for Linux – Mplayer

QuickTime for Windows – Download

QuickTime has several advantages: the quality is nice, it works on not-so-newer systems [I've tested it on my daughter's Powermac G4 and it works better than YouTube or Vimeo] and it’s hosted locally on my site. It can be slow to buffer, but once it’s fully buffered, it works.

So give it a try and see if you like it. Hit me up in the comments and let me know what you think.

a double-double with grilled onions is calling for me

I grew up in Southern California [Garden Grove to be exact] and loved going to In-N-Out Burger. Their simple menu, use of fresh ingredients and great taste make it the king of burger joints. So when I had heard they built their first location in Utah [All restaurants are company owned], we had to stop on our way to Nevada. Nothing hits the stop like a double-double with grilled onions (sorry no pic this time around). Yum!

Valley Of Fire

The entrance to Valley of Fire

I had previously mentioned we had plans to go to Bryce Canyon. It turned out we didn’t have as much time as we wanted to, so we changed plans. Instead, we decided to visit Valley of Fire, which is just 30 minutes north of Las Vegas. The area was very cool, with red rock, different formations and all sorts of wonderful scenery.

Awesome view of the Valley of Fire

It was still pretty warm (temps were in the high 90′s) so walking around was a bit of a challenge for the few hours we were there. We brought some liquids, but not enough. Need to remember to bring more next time we visit. Regardless, my wife and I had a good time there.

17??

“Hey dad… hurry up… we’re hungry!”

My daughter turned 17 this last week. Looking back when I was that age, I was just starting my senior year [She's in 11th grade]. Of course, looking forward to the present day, that means I’m older. But according to my daughter, I’m still cool to hang out with. That’s a plus for both of us. I will enjoy it while it lasts.

Top Ten lists are as common as asphalt roads. They are everywhere and have been worn down to mere rubble, as many times as they have been driven over. So I decided to drop one off and go with a Top Nine. Just to be different.

And now to start things off, I give you the list of the top nine albums that I have listened to so many times, that if CDs and MP3s had grooves, I would have worn deep cuts in them. And back in the day, with the LP and cassette, I did wear out some after being played so much and so often. These albums also have some significant part of my life, where they just make me feel good and take me back to that time and place burned into memory.

Rush: Hemispheres

I started buying albums late in the game. Sure I had my share of Disney 78′s and some 45′s here and there, but LPs were put off till I was 14. I missed out on some good albums, but in 1978, there was Rush’s Hemispheres, which I found on sale for $3.99. Upon first listen, it was so cool to have all of side 1 be a single song, broken up into multiple segments. But turning the record over, I found “The Trees” a song whose lyrics and message cemented my interest in politics. Even today, I steer people towards this album for it’s expert songs and thought-provoking messages.

Guns N’ Roses: Appetite For Destruction

I hated this album when it first came out in the middle of 1987. My ex-wife’s nephew had this album and it was all I could do to avoid hearing anything from it. Fast forward 10 years, when I re-discovered this album on an Original Master Recording Gold CD. My hate went away instantly. This remains one of the records I turn to when I need to release some aggression. Songs like “Out Ta Get Me” and “It’s So Easy” get me in a mood that makes me wish I had those 10 “hate” years back.

Stone Temple Pilots: Purple

In 1992, STP hit the scene with “Core”, which is a great album. But when a sophomore release exceeds all of your expectations, then it takes its place in your “best of” list. Lyrics like “If you die before me, ask if you can bring a friend” may be cleverly cheesy, they tend to stick with you, as do the hits “Big Empty” and “Interstate Love Song.” If you haven’t heard this album in years, put it back in your iPod and maybe you’ll find yourself getting tickets to this year’s reunion tour.

Radiohead: OK Computer

Other than “Creep”, the mainstream audience may have written off Thom Yorke and Co. as an odd band that had even odder songs. But it’s hard to ignore this album from 1997, even if you find it hard to get into it upon the first few listens. Give it another 10 or more spins and you’ll be humming “Karma Police” in your sleep. For me, this album inspires me to be creative and think very much outside the box.

Elton John: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

I heard my first Elton John song on the radio in 1970. “Your Song” was pretty mellow, and the piano was subtle, but it stuck to me enough to want to hear more. It wasn’t until two years after it’s 1975 release that I discovered “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”, with it’s 11 minute opening opus, “Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding”, not to mention “Benny and the Jets” being an oft-hummed tune. Even if you are not familiar with song titles like “Harmony” or “Grey Seal”, the tune will be familiar.

Red Hot Chili Peppers: Blood Sugar Sex Magik

1992 was a powerful year in music and “Blood Sugar Sex Magik” stands as the album no one could avoid. “Give It Away” was trumped many times over by “Under The Bridge”, making Red Hot Chili Peppers a household name. I was already a fan, but this album guaranteed me following them for the foreseeable future. And who can’t enjoy a naughty little ditty like “Sir Psycho Sexy” with it’s “lady cop… trying to cop a feel” story line.

The Beatles: Revolver

I have never really liked a lot of the early Beatles songs. I was always more into their experimental stage their last 4 years of recording. At the start of this stage, normally referred to as the ‘drug years’, “Revolver” kicked things off with “Taxman”, a slam against Brittan. And from that tune until “Tomorrow Never Knows”, it became one of the first albums that was good from start to finish. I’m surprised more people are not familiar with it when I talk about my favorite Fab Four release.

Mad Season: Above

I’m sure there’s several of you out there that are saying, “Mad Season?? Isn’t that a Matchbox Twenty album??” But while it would be another year before Rob Thomas and his band mates would break out on the scene, a super group comprised of Layne Staley (Alice In Chains), Mike McCreedy (Pearl Jam), Barrett Martin and Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees) made a big noise with their only release “Above”. In the 13 years that I’ve owned this album, it has been played more than any other rock album I own. And with the guitar talent of Mike McCreedy on songs like “November Hotel”, it’s hard not to get into this entire album, which is meant to be played all the way through.

Depeche Mode: Violator
My first experience with Depeche Mode was being on the 405 in Los Angeles on August 6, 1985 and hearing “People Are People” on the radio. From that 4 minute moment, they have been one of my favorite bands. And even after seeing them live eight times, my all-time favorite is, without question, 1990′s “Violator.” And you have to admit that no matter how many times you hear “Enjoy The Silence”, you never get tired of it. I know I never do.

So Many More

Picking a top list of anything for me is hard. And especially with music, one of my greatest loves in life. (along with writing) Then to try narrowing it down to the top nine is like asking me to pick between food or water. I will do another post soon with my honorable mentions, or those albums that just missed the cut off.

So what do you think of my list? Any suggestions? Rants? What The Fuck’s? Any favorites you have that I might like? Comment away.
