Apple inventor. Pixar Savior. Technology Visionary.

I got emotional when I heard the news earlier this evening. Twitter was very busy with people posting the news. It’s still a shock, even though I knew of his ill health. Fifty-six is too young for anyone to die. Regardless of their contribution to society. But this one hit a little close to home on many levels. Not just for the love I have for my Apple products. But I lost my mom to a form of cancer. Granted, she lived to be 83. I was hoping the same long life for Mr. Jobs.

It wasn’t to be.

Very fitting tribute.

If there’s something in your life that has been impacted by way of the efforts of Steve Jobs, please send email to rememberingsteve@apple.com. Here’s what I wrote:

I got my first Apple product in 1985. A Fat Mac… 512K with an external floppy drive. I used it to produce technical documentation for businesses in Southern California. I was already using PC clones as my main place of employment was a software store in Tustin, CA. But the Mac different. Unique. I used that Mac for a year until I moved to a Mac Plus.

Since that time, I have always used some type of Macintosh in my personal life. Sometimes in business, but mostly for personal use, including my side work I’ve continued to do. In 1997, I made the jump from a clone Mac running OS 9.1 to a Mac mini running Panther 10.3 in 2005. Since then, I have converted many friends and family to Macs. Not only have the number of “hey, I’m running Windows and there’s an error..” calls gone down, it’s also allowed all of us to be more creative and have a system that simply works. Today, my Mac mini (2010), my MacBook Pro (2009), my MacBook Pro (2006) and my daughter’s iMac 17″ (2007) have all been work horses and rarely give me any grief. I rely on these systems today to do many tasks. In addition to numerous other Apple products that I love and use, it’s the iPad that I bought on day 1 in 2010 (which has since been sold and upgraded to an iPad 2) that changed how I access my data and all of the parts of my life.

Thank you to Steve Jobs for creating Apple and for returning in 1997 to create not just one of the most powerful companies in the world, but to create products by thinking differently.

Your legacy will live on in all of us.

Marty Mankins

You will be missed, Steve.

I admit. I don’t handle loss very well.

For the longest time, it was any kind of loss. As a kid, losing a favorite toy at the grocery store is still a memory that’s burned into my brain [in fact, I am picturing the exact spot at the Lucky supermarket in 1971, where I last saw my little red truck that I was playing with - odd, huh?]. For years, losing various physical items would reduce me to a fit of obsession, looking for said lost item. Fortunately, I’ve been able to better manage how I deal with losing an inanimate object. For example, in August of 2000, I left my Toshiba Libretto on the UTA Trax train when I worked downtown. While I miss the non-replaceable photos and other data, I dealt with the physical loss very well, moving on quickly.

When it comes to humans and pets, I don’t deal well at all. I learn to adjust, but it takes more time to fully realize someone or some creature is gone. I’ve been reassured this is a good thing, because it means I care. But the pain of losing a loved one is never easy.

As those of you that follow me on Twitter and Facebook know, my wife and I had to put our oldest cat down yesterday. Tigress would have been 20 years old on Memorial Day.

Tigress – Queen of the Bed and Blanket

Not even two weeks previous, we had to put down our 17-year-old cat, Princess Maggie.

Maggie – Parked in the driveway

Losing two feline companions in less than two weeks is hard. Both were somewhat unexpected, as both age and physical problems caused their health to decline quickly.

Going from 4 to 1

Up until last July, we had four cats. Our first to pass away was Mamma Kitty, who was 20 years old.

Mamma says, “My chair”

Losing three cats in eight months has taken a toll on me. While I’ve not known them their entire lives, I’ve spent almost eight years with them and getting very attached. I’ve always been a cat person and when my wife and I first met, that was one of her criterias for a partner.

An Entire Lifetime

But knowing someone your entire life and losing them is hard, as my wife has experienced with the cats and as I did when my mom passed away in April 2006, losing her battle with melanoma cancer at the age of 83.

Both my mom and I loved the beach – her at Newport Beach, CA in 2002

This past Monday was three years since she died and while time has helped to ease the pain of not having her around, I still have vivid memories of her and still get emotional when presented with thoughts and wishing I could call her again to share what’s going on in my life.

And for me, there lies one of the main reasons I don’t deal with loss. I miss being with those I care for and love. I miss snuggling with the cats or driving to California and hearing my mom tell her experiences. Call it selfish, but once those people and animals are gone, those times are gone, too.

I’ll get past this dark period of loss, and once I do, I know at least I’ll have the memories of pets I’ve grown close to. I leave you one final photo of our remaining cat: Rocko. May he live for a good while longer. This fragile and caring heart can’t take another loss anytime soon.

Rocko – King of the Deck

It’s another Scooter Sunday. Thanks to the fucking winds we get here in Utah, the ride almost didn’t happen. But unless it’s snowing, I’m going on a ride.

Today’s ride was going to Best Buy. I was looking to try out a Palm Centro and look at a new camcorder – the Canon HV30. There was no Centro. In fact, their entire selection of cell phones was pretty dismal. Not only that, but I stood there with 20 other people to look at cell phones while watching the sales guy fumble about with an impatient customer. Fortunately, they did have the HV30 on display. This is a kick ass camcorder. For under $1,000, it’s pretty nice and loaded with some cool features. And it records HD on MiniDV tapes. But I need to find it for less before it becomes a replacement for my Canon ZR500.

American Idol

Yep… that’s my daughter in front of a giant banner

I admit it. I really am not a fan of reality TV shows. And American Idol is part of those shows I really don’t care for. That doesn’t undermine the fact that the contestants have talent. And one of the final three is from Utah. So Utah declares last Friday David Archuleta day. My daughter decided she wanted to be a part of it by going to the various events. I dropped her off at Murray High School, walking with her into the area where they were setting up for a performance by the American Idol contestant.

That better be Orange Kool-Aid that guy is drinking

I never realized how many people watch this show. Well, that’s a lie. I know it’s watched by millions. It’s obvious the home crowd watches him, and I admit, he does have a great voice. Win or lose [you know he's going to win], he’s got a nice start to a music career. But I hope he can rise above the curse that seems to befall a lot of the winners… only time will tell. The important part in all of this is that my daughter had fun.

The Race For The Cure – SLC

Both my fiance and I lost our mothers to cancer. Her mom died of breast cancer and my mom died of melanoma. Her sister-in-law also lost her mother to breast cancer. It’s a terrible scourge that affects many lives. Each year, the Susan G. Komen Foundation has a Race For The Cure here in Salt Lake, held on the Saturday before Mother’s Day. This was my second year walking in it. Very worthy cause, and the added bonus I got (other than helping donate to fighting cancer) was a 5K walk. Much needed exercise.

Another Ending

And that ends another Scooter Sunday. Stay tuned to this blog for more entries.
