Music Monday: Grammy Recap
|After a no-show for Music Monday last week, I am back this week with a Grammy recap. I didn’t watch the show, except for the final performance and award of the night. But it sounds like I missed a lot.
Who came first? Obviously it was the egg

Lady Gaga showed up inside of an egg. Clever, odd, WTF and everything else in between. I’ll give her original for this since I don’t remember anyone else showing up inside an egg.
Maybe it was an evolutionary step after Björk’s swan outfit from the 2001 Academy Awards.
Mick Jagger performed on stage, without the Stones in tow. I actually want to see what a 67 year old can do to show what the younger crowd can aspire to be in 50 years.
Speaking of younger crowd, Justin Bieber did his 6 minutes of fame. What’s that? He’s still famous? Who knew he would still be popular going into 2011. Maybe I’m 30 years too old to have noticed.
Lady Antebellum took home 5 of the 6 Grammys they were nominated for. Which goes to show how big a song repeating three words could be. Sorry Mick, but “Start Me Up” had a good run at the beginning of all NFL games.
Everyone seems shocked that Eminem got snubbed, even though he and Jay-Z just about swept the Rap categories. Remind me again what type of music they play again? Oh yeah… rap. Both artists got their just deserves. [I like both artists, if you couldn’t tell]
But the top honor of the night went to one of my favorite bands – Arcade Fire. For those of you that are not familiar with the brilliance of last year’s “The Suburbs”, you really should check it out. It made my best of 2010 list.
Here’s a link to their YouTube VEVO page.
And here’s the happy band celebrating their big Grammy win:
Your Take
So who watched the Grammys? Did any of your favorites win?
I kinda half assed watched the show – only to see if anyone good was on – I loved Arcade Fire (as I do) and Mick was awesome. Gwyneth Paltrow is so ridiculous. I almost felt sorry for her. WHY was she even there?!
Them Crooked Vultures won for best hard rock performance – but I didn’t see them there.
Thanks to you, I now know that Them Crooked Vultures won a Grammy. That’s freaking cool.
I still need to go find Mick’s performance.
I watched for the performances, but rarely agree with the award-winners. For example: I liked Arcade Fire’s album well enough, but it didn’t crack my top ten. Granted, my 80’s-tainted musical tastes probably aren’t very relevant today… but I felt other albums on my list which ARE current that I thought were more deserving… This is Happening by LCD Soundsystem, Plastic Beach by Gorillaz, and Broken Bells by Broken Bells to name a few.
Oh well. It’s all a matter of tastes, and I fully accept mine aren’t really in-step with modern music so, as I said, I’m there for the performances… which were pretty good.
Well, we do share LCD Soundsystem and Broken Bells on our top 2010 lists. I would have been just as happy about either one of them winning a Grammy.
And you know I love 80’s music as well.
I can’t remember the last time I watched The Grammys to be honest. Every year I mean to just to keep count of the number of times I find myself saying “who?” when an artist is announced 😉 And good lord I haven’t even listened to Arcade Fire. So much new music, so little time 😉
I thought you had Arcade Fire’s latest album. It’s really good. Well worth the Grammy win.
Normally, I don’t watch. This year, I wanted to watch for some bands, but we ended up at dinner later than I had planned. But got home in time for the final part of the show.
I didn’t watch it, but wanted to. We somehow didn’t record it and I was busy with kid stuff while it was on.
About Justin Bieber, my daughter (age 10) is a huge fan. Her room is covered in posters of him. Because of her I have been listening, and even took her to a concert. Although he’s still not my all time favorite, he has moved up on my list and is even on my ipod because his songs are so catchy. I think also I love him now because of my daughter and how happy he makes her…anything that makes my kids happy makes me happy by default. We saw his movie over the weekend and it was actually kind of sweet. I guess if she’s going to love someone, there are much worse for her to love, right?
I have yet to hear a Justin Bieber song. I don’t know if I would recognize it if I heard it on the radio. My wife’s 8 yr old granddaughter likes him and she sings part of his songs, but I would have to listen more closely to know the song. My slight little dig at him is harmless (as you know) and I can see how he’s a popular music figure today. And you are right, there is worse out there, that’s for sure.
I should have watched the Grammy’s. Then maybe I would know something about music!
I still need to see some of the performances (like Mick Jagger), but overall, it seemed like a decent show this year. And don’t feel bad.. there’s many songs they talked about on the Grammys that I had no clue who they were.
I watched a little of the show – the Gaga through the Eminem/Rhianna performances so I still don’t know Arcade Fire but I plan to listen soon. I wasn’t invested in hoping anyone won, but I agree than Gwyneth should have stayed home. She is beyond ridiculous. Gaga’s egg was…weird. She said she was birthing a race? I think she’s getting dangerously close over into the whacko zone!
Everyone calls Gaga this generation’s Madonna and while Madge did her share of attention grabbing stunts, I don’t remember anything like being inside of an egg.
