Top 5 Songs I Hate The Most
|
It’s been a while since I’ve done one of my Top 9 blog posts. I’ve got a movie one planned soon, But for this post, I’m changing it up a bit. First off, it’s only a Top 5. And this one is a dislike list. In fact, it’s songs I hate… utterly can’t stand to hear in any place. I will leave the room, if appropriate, when one of these songs comes on. They grate on me so much, that I get physically irritated if I have to endure more than a few seconds of these utter musical disasters.
Now I know some of you reading this may think differently, so bear with me as I give a quick summary on why I can’t stand each of these songs.
[NOTE: I tried to find a way to embed the player from last.fm for each of these songs, but it didn’t work. So if you want to listen, you’ll have to click the link and have it open a new browser window.]
- Extreme – “More Than Words”
To listen to this song, click here to open new window to last.fmI’ve liked some of Extreme’s other songs, but for some reason this song just seemed so out of place. Almost like it was some radio hit created just to please the masses and piss off us rockers. I like a good ballad, but this song just didn’t connect with me.
- Chris de Burgh – “The Lady In Red”
To listen to this song, click here to open new window to last.fmI physically cringe when I hear this horrible hack of a love song come on the radio. I can’t turn the station fast enough. I’m sure this guy is talented, but I have zero interest in hearing anything else he’s done. In my musical world, this album and all singles would be out of print.
- Plain White T’s – “Hey There Delilah”
To listen to this song, click here to open new window to last.fmPlease tell me why this song is so important to so many people? Maybe I grew up in the wrong generation, but this effortless and mindless tune brings some to tears and swooning. Of course, most of those are girls, so that could explain why I don’t like this song. But I’ve seen guys tap along to this and get all dreamy. Give me a break and find another song.
- James Blunt – “You’re Beautiful”
To listen to this song, click here to open new window to last.fmMr. Blunt has the most annoying voice that the pop world seems to embrace. Add to that this song, which grates on my nerves like shredded cheese. But I like shredded cheese. I don’t like this song, or James Blunt. He dated a hot supermodel [see a photo of Petra Nemcova] and became an overnight sensation. I’ve heard his first album a few times [not always by choice] and I’ve had to remove it from my iPod. I tried to like him, but can’t.
- Daniel Powter – “Bad Day”
To listen to this song, click here to open new window to last.fmLike James Blunt above, this guy is one of those “me too” sound-a-likes that have that grating pop sound. I like some pop songs and even have a few guilty pleasures [another post for another time]. And I don’t mind someone creating music to get a quick hit. But this Blunt-like clone isn’t for me. And neither is his explanation of a bad day. If I’m having a bad day, I’m picking another song to listen to.
Sounds Off
After reading all that, I’m sure some of you are ready to defend some of these songs. Or maybe there are some that like me, can’t stand these tunes. Chat me up in the comments.
Now if you’ll excuse me for a bit, I’ve got to remove any trace of these songs from my brain with some of my favorites.
I thought “Bad Day” was mediocre… until I saw the video for it, which I really liked. After that, I enjoyed the song. NOTHING, however, could get me to like “You’re Beautiful” which is borderline abuse to listen to.
I’ll not defend any of these songs.
They all suck! Nicely done.
(But now I have “Lady in Red” stuck in my head…thanks!)
dave2 – I’ve not seen the video to that song. I may, based on your liking the video, have to hold my ears and check it out. But we are in full agreement about the “You’re Beautiful” song. Abuse.
b.e. earl – Thanks and I’m sorry. I found Radiohead very effective to push that song out of my head.
While I find it hard to actually *hate* anything (I usually can find some measure of goodness in anything, and tend to focus on it) I don’t particularly like the last 3 songs mentioned.
But I love ‘More than words’ and especially so when I sing either part. It’s a harmonist’s delight! I was so glad to see it added to the SingStar 80s playlist (it’s like guitar hero for the voice).
James Blunt was on a recent Top Gear (BBC America — we may be a season or two behind) and was pretty funny. I can’t say I care for that song though.
whall – Well, yeah.. hate is a strong word. I could replace it with “severely despise”.
Gary Cherone’s vocal’s in that song are not bad, but misdirected, IMO. “Whole Hearted” was a better song and better use of his chops.
delmer – I’ve never heard him in anything other than musical performances. On the other hand, John Mayer is someone I like, both musically and humorously.
Whole Hearted by Extreme was indeed so much better. My Dad bloody loves Lady In Red. I remember when I was younger he’d play that over and over and over. Now I just want to punch Chris de Burgh.
I don’t hate/disklike/find particularly annoying any of those songs, with the possible exception of “You’re Beautiful”. In fact, I’d say I actually like the other four pretty well. “Hey There Delilah” is they only one on my iPod though I may go ahead and get the other three…
So you have a song #5 are the rest tied at #4 or what? LOL….
I would have to add to your top anything by Barbara Streisand, Bette Middler (except Beast of Burden with Mick Jagger, becasue she is one), Celine Dione or most anything by Cher… oh oh oh and Naz is a fucking slow ass hack of a rapper that puts me to sleep…. But the your list is spot on…. EXCEPT I really enjoyed this James Blunt remake :

kevin – LOL… punching Chris de Burgh sounds like fun, especially for writing that song.
ren – Welcome to the blog. At least we have one song in common we don’t like.
kris – uh.. ooops. Good catch. Copy and paste can make one lazy. LOL
Celine Dione is one artist who I can’t stomach…. not just one song… ALL of them. And that parody is pretty funny. There’s tons of them out there. My favorite parody of that song was done by Crackhead Bob on the Howard Stern show.
There aren’t words strong enough to express my hatred for James Blunt and “You’re Beautiful.” All I need to hear is that first four notes, “Dee dee dee dee…” and I start to lose my sh*t.
LOL…
Celine is one person who makes me violently angry…. I just want to punch her when I see her… not sure why the other three are Bush, Cheney and McCain… In that order… LMAO..
That was a good rendition…. I couldn’t find a link to it though…..
Yeah, I can’t argue with any of these. But at the top of my list are “How To Save A Life” by The Fray and “Because of You” by Kelly Clarkson. My neighbor used to play those two songs on a loop for an hour. Horrible.
Not a big fan of the last one and never have been, but I can tolerate and, in some cases, even like the others.
jenny – GAH!! those first few notes mean I’d better be turning something… volume down, the station, the corner…
kris – LOL… violently angry is a good way of putting that. “My Heart Will Go On” More like, “My Fist Will Connect”
brandon – Ok, that Kelly Clarkson song is pretty bad. I can’t think how it goes, but that is a good thing.
kapgar – “Bad Day” is more like “Bad Song” I have another list of songs I can tolerate, but only in small doses.
Oh erm, gee….I agree with all of these. However, I am cursing you because I am now singing that dumb ass James Blunt song!
hilly – I’m starting to see that James Blunt isn’t liked by most people. Hope you can find a song to replace that tune in your head.
I’ve never heard the Delilah one (as far as I know, but based on the rest of your list, I don’t hafta. I can’t stand any of those other ones either! If you go to Lastfm.com, you can see what I like if you feel like it. I am totally in love with the site, everyone should have it just like everyone should have an iPod. If you sign up, pls ‘friend’ me and then I can listen to your stuff, too.
catherine – Looks like I really need join last.fm. I will go check out your profile and see what songs you like.
P.S. I fixed the link in your first comment.
I’m not defending those songs. My kids were singing Delilah a while back because of stupid Kidz Bop. Trust me, it got much worse listening to it sung by children. More than Words really irritated me too, although I can’t tell you why. It just DID.
sue – *shudder* Kidz Bop… how do you make a bad song even worse? Oh My!
I was at a wedding. They had a “precious” little girl sing “You’re Beautiful.” Really, — if I had any love for the song before, it’s gone after that. Kind of like a goat in labour — with a group of siamese in heat behind it. Shudder.
(I clicked over from Kapgar’s site.)
nat – Welcome to the blog. I feel sorry for that little girl, and everyone that was within earshot. “goat in labour” LMAO… then adding those siamese in heat… I think that would give James Blunt some competition.
Everything Chris DeBurgh did sucked ass. And Kevin’s right Whole Hearted is a much better Extreme song. I can tolerate James Blunt, he has other stuff that’s better than Beautiful IMO. The Delilah song is Motley and Invincible Morrison’s song. Mostly because of the age thing I think.
winter – Thanks for the heads up on Chris de Burgh…. I really had no interest in finding out for myself. I figured the age thing had a lot to do with the Delilah song.
I love this post! I’m “borrowing” the idea for my blog and yes, “Lady In Red” is on my list too as well as many other cringe inducing masterfeces.
alex – Thanks, Alex. And after reading your post, I can see I’m not the only one that has a list of songs they hate.
